Blast & IED Testing
PBL’s EFP and fragmenting IED expertise allows coupon and full scale testing of both vehicle and infrastructure threats.
PBL has significant in-house expertise with the conduct of fragmenting and blast IED trials for side attack, under belly and air-burst scenarios. PBL can supply and test surrogates consisting of pre-formed fragments (including improvised threats), Self-forging fragments (EFP’s) and naturally fragmenting munitions.
Tests are carried out at partner sites at locations suited to the NEQ and safety template of the threat of interest. Individual fragments of a wide range of geometries can be gun launched at our Shrivenham site for R&D coupon tests using custom made sabots.
Facilities:
PBL’s climate controlled ballistic test range is equipped to conduct coupon testing of saboted fragments up to 25mm with sample conditioning chambers allowing for thermal conditioning of samples from -20°C to +60°C.
Large, engineered coupons or vehicle segments up to 1000kgs can be accommodated.
High volume filtered extraction ensures a clean, safe and dust free working environment, especially important when testing composite and ceramic targets.
PBL can provide test services at a range of off site facilities allow for blast and fragmenting device testing complete with instrumentation as required.
