Fragment Testing
PBL can launch FSP’s of all sizes (<1.1g – 20mm) up to 2000ms-1
PBL can launch Fragment Simulating Projectiles (FSP) compliant with STANAG / AEP-2920 including chisel nose and right cylinder (rcc) to both DCTA /A3/6723 and MIL-DTL-46593. FSP’s can be fired in skited and un-skirted configurations up to 20mm and at velocities from <200ms-1 to over 200ms-1 subject to fragment type. This high velocity capability is especially useful for testing of EOD suits and vehicle IED protection.
Ball bearings and novel fragments (including ice and debris) can be launched using either gas or powder guns.
Small fragments (<1.1g) can be fired on request for testing of eyewear, clothing and textiles.
Facilities:
PBL’s climate controlled ballistic test range is equipped to conduct coupon testing of fragments up to 25mm with sample conditioning chambers allowing for thermal conditioning of samples from -20°C to +60°C.
Test rigs for holding of helmets, visors, eye protection (AEP-55), soft armour. High speed video for imaging of yaw, impact and velocity measurement.
High volume filtered extraction ensures a clean, safe and dust free working environment, especially important when testing composite and ceramic targets.
